Why I Started a Publishing Company

I haven’t seen another publishing company that empowers the stuck, struggling authors out there—people like me when I started out as a writer.

Many writers are trying to build a career and do everything they can to move forward—but without guidance from a mentor who can tell them where to go, what to do, and how to actually succeed, it’s nearly impossible to get anywhere. In fact, only 1% of authors ever get a traditional publishing deal, and traditional advances have decreased significantly in the past decade—so what are the rest of us supposed to do?

That’s why I started TCK Publishing: to serve the many authors who have an important story or message to share but need advice, guidance, and support to reach readers.

TCK Publishing is not just a business for us. It’s a purpose, a way of life. Our calling is to make the world a better place by empowering authors.

And that’s why when I see someone new to the industry who says, “I’m just going to do it myself,” I applaud their spirit and their dedication to their own success. That’s great! But I also want to be honest with you and let you know that if you want to publish your own books like a serious publishing company would, you have to develop a lot of relationships with industry professionals, and that takes a very long time.

For the first three years of my career as a self-published author, I was basically writing books. I wrote 27 books and self-published each one.

After that, I gradually changed my focus to building a great publishing company—getting the right people together, getting the process down, and helping other writers create great products that readers love.

That has taken an incredible amount of time and effort, and it’s a real testament to the collaborative spirit of this industry, because so many knowledgeable and experienced people guided us into making the right decisions.

Our Guiding Principles for Choosing the Right People

We have particular standards for the people we do business with. We’re not hard to work with—and, in fact, more than anything else, TCK Publishing is about treating people the best way possible. And that’s why it’s important that our collaborators all share these same values.

We have four principles that guide us in choosing the right people:

1. Be Optimistic and Positive.

I always think long-term when I invite people to share my business. If we’re going to work together for the next five, ten, or fifteen years, then I want to make sure that we enjoy working together.

We’ll be calling you up, emailing you, making new deals, and all that fun stuff. We’ll be spending a lot of time together, and that’s why I want to make sure that this will be an enjoyable and productive relationship for everyone—both for the TCK Publishing team and for you.

When challenges come up, like they always do, you need to have the ability to confront them head-on. Life is too short and precious to spend it whining about challenges rather than seeing an opportunity to do better. We want to spend our time with people who love a good challenge, who are fun, and who think positively. It’s not fun for anyone to get stuck because of a roadblock, and that’s why we require people with optimism and positivity.

2. Always Do Your Best.

If you’re a new author submitting the first manuscript you’ve written, we understand that it’s not going to be the best book in the world. Everyone starts at zero and everyone grows from zero. We don’t demand that you be in the top 1% of writers in the world in terms of quality and style. All we ask is that you do your absolute best.

If you submit a manuscript to us and we send it back to you with edits, comments, and suggestions telling you to revise parts or move paragraphs and you decide to take action by editing it, revising, and improving it using all your current skillsets before sending it back to us, then that means you’re someone who always does their best. You are someone we want to work with.

3. Love to Learn and Grow.

We don’t select people solely on skills; we select them based on their values. It doesn’t matter what your skill level is now, because nobody starts out as an expert. Skills grow over time.

If you study how to be great at your craft and learn from feedback from industry experts, I guarantee that you’ll become a much better writer. You might not have the skills today, but if you work hard and practice, in a few years, you’re going to be one of the top writers in the world.

Our newest offering is website and email marketing done for you. A website itself can be used as a tool for many different marketing strategies, email marketing included, and that’s why we encourage our authors to set one up right away.

We won’t manage it for you—you’ll still have to log in, create blog posts, publish them, and all that— nor are we going to make marketing campaigns for you. It’ll be really up to you to manage it. But we’ll give you the support you need to succeed by:

  • Setting up a high-quality, professional website and email marketing tool
  • Teaching you how to use the website
  • Teaching you how to create effective email marketing campaigns

It’s absolutely crucial, as we’ve discussed before, to have an author website and to have an email marketing system. We discovered that a lot of folks don’t have the experience or the time to go through this process, and that’s the reason why a lot of authors haven’t set one up. But we don’t want you to miss out on this opportunity! That’s why we’re now offering this service to create your personal website and set up your email marketing—we take away the barrier to entry and help you get started.

We think of the writers we work with as our partners, and that’s why we place more responsibilities on your shoulders than some other publishers.

What do we mean by that?

In a traditional publishing company, you submit your manuscript, it goes to an editor, and from there, the editor gets to decide on all the changes. If they want to change the voice or the point of view or move scenes around, the editor often makes those decisions themselves.

The editors have a lot of control over your work and they determine the final outcome of your book. They also take your copyright and make all the marketing and publishing decisions—the editor and the marketing department even choose your cover.

But with TCK Publishing, you have complete artistic and creative control over your work. We won’t control the outcome of your book. Of course, there are some things that we won’t publish, like hate speech, illegal content, and stuff like that. But everything else is your decision. You will be responsible for how to bring your artistic vision to life.

I believe this helps us create better products in the long term, because our authors are free to experiment. If you want to write a whole new genre or cross genres, or create a book that’s never been done before, we’re open to that.

Our responsibility comes after you send us your final manuscript, ready for the publishing process. That’s when we take all the work off your shoulders. We will help you with book title ideas, branding, subtitles, the blurb, the back cover copy, and all the publishing works.

50-50 Royalties

We split royalties with our clients 50-50. Most publishers pay only 8% to 15% royalties—that’s a big difference from 50%!

We’ve talked about all the processes we have in place and all the people on our team who make this company great and, honestly, great people don’t come free. So we cover all those expenses. We use our part of the royalties to sustain the team and you get to keep your 50% as profit (well, except for maybe personal marketing campaigns and your own website).

If you think about the overhead costs and expenses we incur as a business, you are actually coming out ahead and that’s exactly how we designed this process.

Focus on Your Strength

The work that you are most passionate about is your strength. We believe that using your strength will make you more effective and productive.

If you’re someone who loves to speak and you know you can speak all day without it feeling like work, then we’ll make sure you get to focus on that. We’ll get you a list of the top podcasts in your market, as well as all the radio and TV opportunities available.

We’ll connect you to book reviewers in your market, give you the resources you need to build relationships with reviewers, and train you to build those relationships the right way to ensure that you get your marketing message to people all around the world.

What to Do Before Submitting Your Manuscript

Great! It looks like you’re ready to become part of our team. There are a few things we recommend you do before submitting your manuscript:

How to Pitch Us

If you’ve never tried contacting a publishing company before or if you’ve been rejected in the past, you might find sending that first email a little intimidating. I don’t want you to stress over it, so I’ve come up with an example of how to send that first pitch. It should take you no more than five minutes.


I’m the author of [Book Title].

It’s a 95,000-word dark fantasy novel with a touch of mystery.

This is the first book in a six-book series. I have completed the first two books, and the third one will be finished within two months.

I have [a website, blog, email list, social media following, etc.] with about 10,000 followers.

Attached you will find my manuscript ready for your review in .docx format.


In the example, you have your opening followed by the book title. Then you tell us the word count and the genre. On the third line, tell us your plan, including if it’s going to be a series, how many books you have completed, and when you plan to finish the other books.

After that, tell us about your platform. Now, we don’t really expect you to have one, especially if you are a new author, but it’s always good to start thinking about that sooner rather than later.

And lastly, make sure to attach your manuscript in a .doc or .docx format so that we can use the track changes feature of MS Word to discuss edits with you.

After you send us that first email, we’ll send your manuscript to an editor and provide you with edits and suggestions to help you improve it. If you put the work into the manuscript and come back to us with improvements from there, then we‘ll keep moving.

But if we work hard on edits and comments to help you improve your writing and you don’t get back to us, or you don’t take our edits into account and don’t actually improve your manuscript, then that’s it—end of relationship. That’s how we work.

It will take us 7–14 days to have an editor review your manuscript and provide detailed feedback and comments.

We’ll provide a free sample edit for you so you’ll know where you can improve: typos, grammatical errors, point of view, etc. Please wait 15 days before sending a follow-up email, because that’s how long the editorial process will take. If we don’t get back to you within 14 days, then by all means, follow up with us because we probably didn’t get your email.

Please don’t send us 10 emails at once, because that’ll make it take a lot longer to go through the many, many submissions in our queue. We appreciate your courtesy on that. Sending only one email will also help us to easily keep track of our conversation under one email thread.
