If you’ve written a book, you need to market and promote it so people will actually buy it.
One of the important things you’ll need to do is get some great book blurbs, endorsements, or testimonials from leaders in your market or genre.
How to Get Book Blurbs and Endorsements
The bigger the name, the better the blurb will do when it comes to actually helping you sell more books. You’ll be surprised how easy it can be to actually get celebrities and famous authors to write a blurb for your book if you just ask (the right way).
Here’s how to make it happen.
1. Write Down Your Dream List
You should aim to get at least 10 great blurbs for your book. You may not need to use all of them, but by getting 10, you’ll ensure you have more than enough.
In order to get 10 good blurbs, you’ll need to create a list of about 50 people to contact.
So who should you put on your blurb list?
- Famous authors or writers in your market
- Famous celebrities, thought leaders, business people, or other well-known people who are interested in books like yours
- People who would be well-known to your ideal readers
Just brainstorm everyone you can think of that meets these criteria and add them to your list. If you’re stuck or can’t come up with 50 names, go to Amazon, search for bestselling books in your market, and see who wrote blurbs for those books—and then contact those folks and ask them to write a blurb for you.
Keep in mind that the more well-known the blurb writer is to your readers, the more helpful it will be.
For example, getting a blurb from Stephen King sounds great… but not if you write non-fiction.
And getting a blurb from Tony Robbins could be amazing… but not if you write contemporary romance novels.
It’s much better to get a review or blurb from someone who’s well-known by your readers, so make sure you focus on contacting those folks instead of just reaching out to random famous people.
2. Find Their Contact Info
Once you’ve got your list, you need to find their contact info.
The first place to look is on their website. Find their email or contact form and jot that down in a spreadsheet. Don’t contact them yet until you’ve written your outreach script.
If you can’t find their contact info online or on their website, try using an app like hunter that will find email addresses for you.
3. Write Your Script
This is where you write the email script you’ll use to ask for a blurb. Here’s a short blurb template you can use or model for your book:
I’m a big fan of your work!
I’m writing to ask if you would like to write a brief blurb for my new book [Book Title].
It’s about [insert 1-2 sentence synopsis of your book here].
The book will be published in [insert timeline when you plan to publish your book] so I would need your blurb before [insert blurb delivery deadline date] in order to put it on the back cover.
If you’re interested, just let me know and I’ll be happy to send you a paperback or eBook copy of the book for your review.
4. Ask for Blurbs
Once you’ve written your script, it’s time to start asking for blurbs!
Contact everyone on your list.
If you don’t hear back within 14 days, you should follow up and ask again.

Editorial Reviews on Amazon
Add your blurbs to the Editorial Reviews section of your book on Amazon. You can do that through your Author Central account once you set up your author profile on Amazon.
Add the blurbs to the back of your cover design for your book.
Add the blurbs to your marketing copy that you’ll use to help promote your book. This is especially helpful if you’re doing PR for your book.
You can even add one of your best blurbs to your book description on Amazon and other retailers to help entice readers to pick up your book and read it!
