A. He slipped the thick hard-bound book onto the table. Sarah glanced half-heartedly at it, then reached out her hand and gushed at the cover. “Thank you, Andrei! I’ve always wanted a copy of this!” As she said the designated script, she took furtive glances at the other diners in the restaurant. Thankfully, nobody seemed to be paying any attention to them. In only a few minutes more, she would be safe in her hotel room and slipping out the fake passport concealed under the binding of the book. Soon Eliza would be safely out of Poland.

B. On the credenza at home there was a photograph of Bennett in his baseball uniform. He had just hit a home run, and his face held a look of peculiar intensity and joy, as if at that moment he were experiencing something transcendent. She wished he would look at her like that again.

C. “Oh, Hazel! I was dreaming. It was dreadful. You were there. We were sitting on water, going down a great, deep stream, and then I realized we were on a board—like that board in the field—all white and covered with black lines. There were other rabbits there—bucks and does. But when I looked down, I saw the board was all made of bones and wire; and I screamed and said, ‘Swim—everybody swim’; and then I was looking for you everywhere and trying to drag you out of a hole in the bank. I found you, but you said, ‘The Chief Rabbit must go alone,’ and you floated away down a dark tunnel of water.”

D. Indeed, she had gone so far as to look up his address in the Red Book. Had he meant to warn her that day? If so, why? Surely she was at least entitled to demand an explanation. He had looked at her so kindly. Perhaps he might tell them something concerning Mrs. Vandemeyer which might lead to a clue to Tommy’s whereabouts.

E. “Yes, there IS need!” The child raised her head quickly, revealing a tear-stained face and trembling lips. “YOU would cry, too, if you were an orphan and had come to a place you thought was going to be home and found that they didn’t want you because you weren’t a boy. Oh, this is the most TRAGICAL thing that ever happened to me!”

8. The last book I enjoyed was from the following genre:
