Thriller Subgenres
There are many subgenres in the general category of “thriller.” While we welcome any subgenre—and we love cross-genre novels that take the concept of the thriller in a totally new direction—there are some subgenres we’re particularly interested in publishing:
Crime Fiction: This literary genre encompasses stories about crime and detectives, usually with a focus on the motives of the criminals. There are several subgenres of crime fiction, including detective fiction, courtroom drama, hard-boiled thrillers, and legal thrillers. These books are usually very well-researched and include both character development, an engrossing plot, and detailed descriptions of how law enforcement and court proceedings work. If you have expertise in the law or contacts in law enforcement or the courtroom, you might be particularly well-suited to writing the next great crime novel!
Legal Thriller: This subgenre includes stories involving lawyers on a mission to solve important cases (usually, the client is innocent but there are nefarious forces at work which try to block the attorney’s efforts). Protagonists in legal thrillers often find themselves and their close friends or family in mortal danger.
Medical Thriller: Medical thrillers include characters with medical backgrounds. Split Second and Game Changer are two of the bestselling books of this subgenre. The main character typically has to prevent a deadly disease from spreading or solve a mystery involving a nefarious plot that’s experimenting on innocents or otherwise using medical science for the wrong reasons. Detailed descriptions and careful research are often central to creating a gripping, authentic-feeling medical thriller.
Political Thriller: This is a type of thriller that is set against the backdrop of a political power struggle. Political thrillers usually have very complex plots, with lots of twists and a series of subplots, but they often revolve around characters fighting for an important political appointment or conquest. A subcategory of this subgenre is spy fiction.
Spy Fiction is literature involving espionage inspired by rivalries and intrigues between major political powers and the establishment of modern intelligence agencies.
Psychological Thriller: A distinguishing characteristic of a psychological thriller is a marked emphasis on the mental states of its characters: their perceptions, thoughts, distortions, and general struggle to grasp reality. Many psychological thriller protagonists have psychological conditions or skewed perceptions of reality which make them untrustworthy (and exciting) narrators.
Techno-thriller: This is a hybrid genre drawing from science fiction, thrillers, spy fiction, action, and war novels. Techno-thrillers usually include many technical details on their subject matter, often military technology. Science fiction writers often find themselves writing techno-thrillers because of the close similarities in these genres.
Mystery Fiction: This is a thriller subgenre that deals with stories of mysterious deaths and crimes to be solved. Mystery fiction may also involve a supernatural mystery where the solution does not have to be logical, and sometimes there is no crime involved.
Are Thriller and Suspense the Same Thing?
The term “thriller” is used to describe a genre of writing that keeps readers on the edges of their seats. Unlike in a mystery, the readers and the protagonist usually know the culprit of the crime, but the question is how that person will be brought to justice.
Suspense can be experienced in any genre. It’s what keeps readers uncertain about the outcome until the very end.
Best Selling Thriller Books
Here’s an example of one of our best selling thrillers, The Guilty Die Twice.
Estranged lawyer brothers Travis and Jake Lynch find themselves on opposing sides of the courtroom in a high-profile, grisly double murder case—with another accused criminal’s life on the line. The case pits brother against brother in a contest of wits, wills, and legal savvy that will shake the justice system to its core: both Lynches are convinced they’re in the right, but the truth turns out to be more complicated—and deadly—than either could have possibly imagined.
