Why Book Editing Services Are Important
One of the biggest challenges most new writers face is the lack of ability to afford professional editing services to help them improve their writing skills and hone their craft.
In another article, we shared the step-by-step process for finding a professional editor, but if you can’t afford to pay for an experienced editor, you’ll need to get a little more creative in your hunt for free editing assistance.
Free Book Editing Service
Although many writers talk about having friends, family, and old college professors help them edit their work, that’s really not the ideal way to go about the editing process for a book or short story that you plan to publish. A professional editor with years of experience and training in your market or genre can provide valuable feedback and advice that goes far beyond simply correcting spelling errors, typos, grammatical errors and usage errors.
A professional editor will not only help improve your manuscript, but they should be able to provide guidance for you as a writer to help you improve your writing skills. A great editor will tell you what areas you should be focusing on to improve—things like using the right point of view (POV), avoiding filler words, writing dialogue properly, character development, and more.
In other words, working with a professional editor will help you hone your craft as a writer much more effectively and much faster than working with amateurs.
If you don’t have the budget of $500 to $1,500 to hire a professional editor, you may want to consider using a free editing service. The downside is that you have to wait and be patient, but the good news is that you will be able to work with an extremely qualified and experienced editor to help you improve your writing.
List of Free Editing Services
There’s an amazing nonprofit organization created by writers for writers called Tethered by Letters.
One of their programs is a free editing service for authors. They require you to become an active member of their community, and you’ll have to wait a few weeks until there’s an editor free to work with you, but it’s definitely worth it!
A free edit from Tethered by Letters may include developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, and/or proofreading.
Free Sample Edits
Although there aren’t many organizations I’ve found that offer 100% free book edits like Tethered by Letters, all professional editors will offer authors a free sample edit.
A free sample edit is an industry standard service offered by just about every professional editor out there.
The sample edit is a great way for the editor to quickly edit the first 1,000 to 2,000 words of your manuscript for free so they can see what areas you need to work on. The free sample edit also allows you as the author to determine which editor provides the best edits and comments on your work before you decide to hire or pay anyone.
If you’re looking for an editor who can help polish your writing and hone your manuscript so it’s ready to be published, getting a free sample edit is the best way to ensure you are hiring the right editor before you decide to pay.
