The wide availability of podcasts and audiobooks gives us more access to entertainment and education than ever before.
Even if you don’t have time to sit down and read a book, you can always listen to an audiobook, or enjoy podcasts that cover any number of subjects, from fictional stories, to true crime, fashion, and food.
One of the greatest benefits of listening to podcasts and audiobooks is that you are able to multitask while you listen. This means that you can actually learn new things while being productive in other ways, like tackling household chores or commuting to work.
19 Things To Do While Listening to Audiobooks or Podcasts
Here are some of the things you can do while you’re listening to podcasts:
1. Drive or commute to work
Podcasts are great companions on long drives or commutes to and from work, because all you need is earphones or earbuds and your smartphone and you’re good to go.
If you’re driving, you can even connect your smartphone to your car speakers. Just make sure you set up your playlist before you leave the parking lot so you won’t have to scroll through your phone while driving.
Remember to always keep your eyes on the road!
2. Exercise or take a walk
Instead of blasting Lady Gaga during your next workout, finish that riveting story podcast you’ve been tuning in to, or catch the latest episode of your favorite celebrity’s podcast. You can also take a walk or jog to your local park.
If you’re fully immersed in your podcast, you may not even notice the time flying by, which could result in a longer and more engaging workout.
3. Complete a jigsaw puzzle
OK, so you might not complete the puzzle, especially if you attempt one of those 500- or 1,000-piece masterpieces. But working on a jigsaw puzzle keeps your hands busy and adds a little extra stimulation for your brain while you enjoy a podcast or audiobook.
4. Fold laundry
Mundane tasks seem to go by faster when your mind is occupied. And what can be more mundane than folding the laundry? So before you sit down with your laundry basket, dig up something to listen to and fold away!
Because you’ll be moving your hands while folding clothes, you can opt to play the podcast on your phone speaker instead of through earphones; if you choose to use earphones, just find a way to keep the wires from getting tangled up in your hands.
5. Clean the house
Cleaning the house is another routine chore that can quickly become a bore. Crank up the speakers with your favorite podcast and see how quickly the time will fly! For this work, you can listen over loud speakers or on your earphones. Earphones will work better if you intend to do some vacuuming.
This can also work for when you want to organize or rearrange a room. What better way of spending your time, say, stacking and rearranging books on a shelf, than with an entertaining or fascinating podcast keeping you company?
6. Prepare meals
Meal prep can take some time, but chopping and dicing can feel more productive when you learn new things while working.
Play your favorite podcast on loudspeaker so you can move around freely. If you want to use earphones, just make sure to keep them clear of your knife!
7. Organize digital files
With the sheer number of e-mails crowding your inbox, it can take a considerable amount of time to clear them up!
Studies show that the average person receives 84 e-mails a day, with only 68 of them being relevant or important. All that clutter can really take a toll on your productivity.
Clearing e-mails and organizing files into their appropriate folders on your computer can be mindless enough that you can enjoy your favorite podcast while tidying them up.
Since your hands will be free, gardening is another perfect activity for listening to podcasts (or perhaps a great audiobook about gardening, so you can practice what you learn!).
You may not always feel in the mood to clean out a space or to toss out old things you no longer use. But when you have a nice podcast going, decluttering can feel like a breeze.
So the next time you feel like you need to clear out space, plug in a good podcast, start your piles for “Keep,” “Toss,” and “Donate,” and dig away.
10. Go for a long drive
Driving isn’t just for commuting to work! Hop in the car, pull up your favorite podcast, and enjoy a nice drive around town, to the beach, or another scenic area.
Podcasts and audiobooks were meant to entertain and inform, so you don’t always have to aim for maximum productivity while listening to them! And besides,
And besides, for the sake of you health and sanity, some R&R time ought to be on your to-do list anyway!
So when you have some down time, lie back, grab your favorite beverage, and listen to something you truly enjoy.
12. Play games
There’s no need to feel guilty about playing mobile or online games, especially if you’re listening to something useful while doing so.
Of course, this will work best if the game you’re playing doesn’t require too much thinking or strategizing.
13. Sit at your favorite coffee shop
Head over to your local coffee shop, order your favorite latte, and people watch as you catch up on the latest episode of your favorite podcast.
If you are tasked with taking care of a child or children, you can still enjoy podcasts while supervising them. You can just let them play on the floor near you, and you can listen away on your earphones.
Just be sure you can still hear outside noises in case of an emergency (it’s best not to use earphones for this one!).
15. Play with your pets
Don’t forget about your furry friends! Listening to podcasts or audiobooks frees up your hands, so you can get that quality time in by tossing a ball or offering cuddles to the goodest boy.
16. Try handicrafts
Getting creative may mean your hands are busy, but your mind can usually still wander freely. Add a podcast to your knitting, crocheting, or woodworking time, so you can kill two birds with one stone.
17. Color or draw
Channel your artistic side by using this time to doodle or have fun with an adult coloring book. This can be incredibly relaxing and won’t take your attention from whatever you’re listening to.
18. Tackle a home repair
Pop in your headphones and finally tackle that leaky faucet or broken step. Listening to something interesting can make mundane chores more enjoyable.
19. Try to fall asleep
Who says bedtime stories are just for children? If you have a favorite story from your childhood or want to listen to a relaxing podcast about meditation, these can be great ways to gently drift off to slumberland.
